We have been busy working on new ideas and activities and the first new addition to Cornish Rock Tors in 2012 is ‘Ecoasteering‘.

This has been my little project for a while now and I am so happy to have it live and ready for the upcoming 2012 season. It turns out we are all really geeky when it comes to the ocean and its weird and wonderful ways (we’d rather sit in and watch blue planet on a Saturday night than go out!). We want to pass some of that enthusiasm on and introduce people to some awesome creatures and places.

We spend most of our lives in the sea whether it be working or in our free time. You pick up little gems of knowledge each time you go in, sometimes you learn the hard way (stepping on a weaver fish for example) and sometimes the nice way by seeing something interesting and new.

We have started Ecoasteering to offer something interesting and new. It combines the challenges of a normal Coasteering session but with more of an emphasis on finding weird and wonderful wildlife and learning about our coastal environment. All of our guides have a very good knowledge of the local area and are always keen to pass that information on.

This activity will introduce people to the awesome wildlife that perhaps they wouldn’t have ever seen or noticed before. Everybody should walk away with a few gem bits of information or a cool fact about a species of sea life they previously didn’t know anything about!

If you have any questions on our new Ecoasteering sessions check out the page on the website and please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us! Kat (new admin ninja) has now started in the office and she is super clued up on all of our activities and very chatty. Plus she puts up with constant tea and cake breaks and dubstep on a daily basis…hero!

Also a massive thank you to ‘Be A Tiger‘ web design for being massive legends and organising the new webpage for Ecoasteering.

Summers here!! Yewwww See you soon!

Almost like last Summer this Winter is soon going to have flown by! It seems that as I get older the seasons are getting shorter and shorter. I remember being little and the 6 weeks Summer holiday feeling like a year! Not anymore Winter is starting to drift into Spring nicely. The daffodils are starting to come out, and I’m seeing more and more daisies daily (try saying that after a few beers!).

We have been nice and busy in the office over the last few weeks with bookings coming in on a daily basis! Some days are almost fully booked, so if you’re wondering what to do over the Easter holidays give us a shout as we can offer you; Coasteering, Sea Kayaking, Climbing and Powerboat Tours. I guarantee that if you get a day of sunshine any of the above will be a highlight of the year! We are working on some new things this year so keep a close eye on our website to stay up to date with what’s going on with CRT!

I’ve noticed that more and more people are starting to come out of their winter hibernation around Polzeath and on the sunny days the beach is full of happy smiley faces! It’s got to the stage again now that just nipping to the shop to grab some milk ends up taking an hour or so! It’s brilliant how everybody bumps into each other and has a good chat be it about the weather, surf or misbehaving dogs (mainly the CRT mascot Isaac).

It’s safe to say that Polzeath is well underway in getting ready for the 2012 season and so are we! Give us a ring and we look forward to getting you out on your Easter Adventure!

See you soon!

For me coming to the end of a Summer is a weird time as the fun times of the beach being busy, BBQ’s with friends and people hanging around is soon to be over. Everybody starts getting ready for hibernation mode, locking down winter jobs, packing on a few pounds for warmth and learning how to see in the dark again. All those rumours of “another really cold winter” flying around do tend to leave me feeling slightly glum about trying to maintain getting in the sea on a regular basis.

That being said we did start off with our fairly normal winter, lots of wind, rain, massive unusable swell and more wind! There were a couple of gem days after Christmas and as a result, one nice day we managed to make a little video of a Coasteering session.

Please watch it….like it…..then share it! If you do all 3 then you’re a massive legend!

This winter on the whole has been surprisingly warm until February where we have seen our first bit of frost at Polzeath. We have had epic sunshine (albeit freezing cold!), and an amazing run of surf. There seems to be a lot of happy smiley faces around the beaches at the moment. Matt has been pretty stoked as he’s been able to sneak in a few ice climbs in North Wales before the winter was over and I continued to battle my frozen wetsuit and brave the surf.

Things are starting to hot up for the start of the season now, and we can’t wait to get going this year! The beach is very busy today with families and dog walkers and I’ve got a feeling it will only get busier.

We are getting enquiries for activities coming in pretty much every day now! Give us a ring if you’re thinking of coming down to Cornwall soon and we can get you booked in for the activity of your choice!

I managed to get a quick snap of Polzeath during the particular cold snap. How would you fancy Coasteering around the Icicles?

Here at Cornish Rock Tors we’re committed to giving our customers the best experiences in the Cornish outdoors. To ensure we deliver the safest, adrenaline filled and enjoyable adventures, we only provide activities which we are absolutely passionate about. These are the activities in which we are most experienced and get the most enjoyment from: rock climbing, coasteering and sea kayaking.

We reckon these are the best activities to try out when in Cornwall. We also happen to believe that these activities are the best for exploring Cornwall’s rugged terrain and coastline.

Coasteering Cornwall

From our base in Polzeath we’re lucky to have speedy access to some of the best routes for coasteering in Cornwall. For Coasteering Cornwall adventures, we are truly blessed. There are sheltered coves, rocky points, caves and gullies to explore nearby. And the best bit about Coasteering in Cornwall is that almost anyone can do it. There are no skills to learn, so it’s open to most ages and abilities,. That’s why coasteering remains our most popular activity.

Rock Climbing Cornwall

Rock climbing is what got us into outdoor activities in the first place. Between our instructors we have decades of climbing experience, gathered from years of rock climbing in far-flung places. But we’re always happy to return home to Cornwall which boasts some of the best sea cliff rock climbing in the world. Along with rocky outcrops on our broody moors, this makes rock climbing Cornwall a fantastic activity for beginners and improvers alike.

Sea Kayaking Cornwall

Millions of people visit Cornwall’s beaches each year, but only the lucky few get to witness the beauty of the Cornish coast from offshore. This is where sea kayaking Cornwall comes in. We use sit-on top kayaks and launch from beaches with little or no swell, so this activity can be enjoyed by those new to kayaking as well as better skilled paddlers.

There are tens of other activities you can do in Cornwall. Some of them are great fun and thoroughly recommended. But for us we’re more than happy with our choice to practice and promote our favourite threesome: rock climbing, coasteering and sea kayaking.

If you’d like to try out one of these Cornwall activities, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Blimey it’s all gone a bit wild and woolly down here in Cornwall! Summed up nicely by the photo above courtesy of Mat Arney. Not as bad as Scotland though, today they issued a ‘Code Red’ weather warning from the Met Office! That translates to a stiff onshore wind down here and a lot of Mizzle – check out the meaning of it online….pretty funny.

I always thought I was good in cold weather and used to what Cornwall could throw at me over the winter but having just come back from a surf trip in Indonesia I must admit I am struggling a little. I am waiting for that perfect surf report before I bring myself to claw my way into my stinky 5mm winter wetsuit, boots, gloves and hood!

I was pretty stoked to be home as it’s now definitely the festive season, straight off the plane into some minced pies and mulled wine, yum! All that surfing and healthy eating is sadly going to fade to stuffing my face with Quality Street and watching bad Christmas movies…YES!!! Having said that Isaac is being walked about 3 times a day now due to his ever growing energy levels, the only way I can get on with some work is to tire him out so much he falls asleep for a few hours.

I am very happy to say we have had a lot of interest in our activity ‘Vouchers‘ that we have for all of our ‘Activities’. They can be for an individual or group and make a great Christmas present or stocking filler. If there’s anybody in your family that is a bit of an adrenaline junky or loves doing fun things outdoors with friends and family then please get in touch while there’s still time!!!

Must dash as I now have to find the perfect Christmas tree and try to persuade Isaac that it’s not evil and he doesn’t have to bark at it all day long.

I hope everybody has a great Christmas and New Year. Eat and drink as much as you can over those few awesome days, I don’t want to be the only one!

Merry good times,

Well September proved to be a bit of a wash out compared to what we were all hoping for (Sunny hot good times with amazing surf!) but we did have a load of good fun Coasteering sessions due to a lot of swell being around. It felt like we were having a permanent battle with Mother Nature in order to run our Sea Kayaking sessions as the wind didn’t drop below 20mph the whole month! Possibly an exaggeration but it certainly felt like it.

However this been said we did have loads of fun sessions and then had an absolutely stunning weekend towards the end of September and this tied in with the Jess Memorial Surf Contest so it seemed we were to have one weekend of Sunny hot good times with amazing surf! I even managed to get through to the final, happy days! Some pictures of the weekend can be found at 360 Photography.

In and around the sessions we’ve had over the month I’ve been getting things ready for October Half Term and Matthews spent most of his time hanging off cliffs 50ft above the sea with no ropes in Majorca! (Sunny hot good times with amazing climbs! Pictures and Videos to follow!) We are now starting to fill up over the Half Term so if you’re planning on coming down give us a ring. It would be great to see people out with us getting stuck in before the water temp drops too much and the dreaded time change of the clocks comes around.

On a final note, Lou our ‘admin ninja’ is doing amazingly well with her furniture ‘Kitsch Attic’ so Isaac the CRT mascot AKA ‘old man face’ decided to help during one of her photo shoots. He truly does have the face of an old man and expression to go with it.

Sunday 7th August was the Big Swim Cornwall, a mile swim race from Port Gaverne to Port Isaac. The conditions were undoubtedly spicy as 8 safety boats guided the 300 competitors between the two bays, our very own Sea Explorer amongst the support. Our lead female Instructor Harriet took the day off to participate in the event. A defending champion in the women’s division last year, she was up against some fierce competition and came a commendable 23rd overall, swimming through the swell and wind in 26 minutes. Not a bad result considering any training for the race was affected by a broken
scaphoid six weeks ago. Quite a few local faces took part including Wavehunters’ Andy Cameron who raced into the harbour graciously receiving his pint of Doombar at the other end!

The conditions yesterday led our Coasteering sessions to be run from the more sheltered venue of Port Quin. A small fishing harbour tucked into the Doyden headland, Port Quin offers some exciting traverses and challenging jumps as we explore the coastline. A picturesque hamlet, it actually has quite a dark, mysterious past. It is still sometimes referred to as the “Village that died” as late one stormy night in the 19th century the entire male population of the hamlet drowned following a fishing expedition. Port Quin was left deserted as the widowed women left, leaving the village abandoned. Spooky!
Matthew’s Cornish Sea Tours website has gone live, check it out! He has thoroughly enjoyed reading through the testimonials from his Power boat Tours, along with the fan mail!

Quote of the day: ‘Simon Carley Smith is real hot’ – Kate Batty appreciating the return of our long lost instructor/founder.

Due to the confusion we often find amongst people first encountering the word coasteering we have decided to clearly define it’s pronunciation, meaning and mention a few common comic failings, ha.

coast·eer·ing
noun /ˌkōstˈi(ə)riNG/

Coasteering is a physical activity that encompasses movement along the intertidal zone of a rocky coastline on foot or by swimming, without the aid of boats, surf boards or other craft. It includes adventure swimming through calm water or white water; climbing and sea level traversing above deep water; jumping, often seen as the most appealing and exciting part of coasteering, and exploring the marine geology of the coastline to provide a high energy environment.

Incorrect pronounciations of ‘Coasteering’ we have heard recently:

Coast-al-steering
Coaster-ing
Coast-steering
Coast-ar-ing
Coaster- mil-eering
Coaster-ear-ing
Coaster-meering
Rock-et-eering
