Matthew discovered hill walking
as a scout and climbing when at university. Since then (sadly a long time
ago now) he has climbed all over the UK, in France, Spain, Croatia, Australia,
New Zealand and the Indian and Nepalese Himalaya. Matthew also has a strong
connection with the sea as he grew up on Guernsey and spent much of his
miss spent youth scrambling around the sea cliffs there. He has in fact
just qualified as a sea kayak instructor. His qualifications include the
Beach Lifeguard (NARS) qualification, the Single Pitch Award (SPA)(Climbing),
the Mountain Leader Award (ML Summer) and the 4 Star Kayak Award (Sea)
and Level 1 Coach (both BCU new syllabus). Matthew spends most of his life
up cliffs or in the sea and wouldn't have it any
other way.
Simon started climbing in his early teens with annual trips to North Wales. It was a month long expedition to Iceland when he was 16 though that cemented his love of the mountains. Simon has since climbed high mountains in the Alps, the Rockies, the Andes and the Himalayas. His latest adventure will be completing the Haute Route this Easter, a seven day ski-mountaineering route linking Chamonix to Zermatt.. Simon is also a keen surfer and as well as surfing all over the UK he has also been on trips to France, Portugal, South America, Australia, the Maldives and California.
Simon holds the beach lifeguard (NARS) qualification and the Single Pitch Award (SPA). He describes himself as 'not being as strong or as good looking as Matt'.
Andy Davies is the technical advisor for Cornish Rock Tors kayaking activities but also teaches and guides with us here on the North Coast. Andy started kayaking with the Exeter Canoe Club when he was 10 years old and entered his first race when he was 12. The race was the 19mile Exeter Decent and amazingly he came third. Since then he has Kayaked almost everywhere in Europe and been involved in expeditions in Norway and Nepal. Andy has also represented Great Britain and Scotland at international level in different disciplines. Andy holds the highest personal proficiency in Sea Kayaking, Surf Kayaking, Inland Kayaking and Open Canoeing and is a level 4 coach in all four of these disciplines. He is also a National Trainer Assessor and is the BCU Paddle Sports Development Officer for the South West Region. He also holds the Single Pitch Award (SPA) and is a RYA Dingy Instructor. Andy says he divides his time between paper work and inspiring others into the sport he loves.
Andy Newton is the technical advisor for Cornish Rock Tors climbing activities. He discovered climbing when he was 18years old on the scary sandstone cliffs of Merseyside. He originally trained as a teacher but became a full time outdoor instructor in 1980. Since then he has been involved in guidebook production, has been a technical advisor to the Mountain Leader Training Board and Secretary of the Mountain Leader Training Board Wales and is also an Inspector for the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority. Andy has climbed all over Europe and America and holds the Mountain Instructor Certificate the UK's highest qualification in climbing and mountaineering. Andy says he splits his time equally between partying, climbing, family and sleeping, though not necessarily in that order.
Cornish Rock Tors also employs freelance instructors for the summer, all these instructors hold the relevant national governing body awards for the activities they teach and have also undergone thorough in-house training. These superstar instructors include Jack Rockcliff-King (coasteering), Jenny Jennoi (climbing), Graham Swingler (coasteering) and others.
