Tregildrans Quarry

Our all-weather venue is a sheltered freshwater lake set within a quiet wooded valley at Cornish Tipi Holidays, just five minutes drive from our North Cornwall base at Port Gaverne.  A fantastic venue in its own right, it’s also a perfect alternative for when sea and weather conditions cause us to cancel activities on the coast.  Weather is not a factor here.

Cornish Tipi Holidays’ beautiful site is only a few miles inland from Port Gaverne, but it’s a world away from the wild Atlantic coast; woodland, streams, flowery hedgerows and shimmering lake water lie undisturbed except for the occasional visiting heron, and the happy campers and newlyweds (they do outdoor weddings too) enjoying this haven in the North Cornish countryside.  The lake is set in a former quarry, the stone from which was used to build the harbour walls at Port Isaac.  It is approximately 200 metres long, 15 metres deep in places, and is sheltered from the elements making it perfect for coasteering, climbing, swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddling.  For the ultimate experience you can even stay on site in one of their fully-furnished tipis, or bring your own tent or campervan.

The Venue

Our sheltered all-weather venue at Tregildrans Quarry means that, because all of our coastal activities on the north and south coasts are dependant upon weather and sea conditions, if we have to cancel a sea-session in the event of adverse conditions then we will be able to offer you an alternative.  Quarry activity sessions will involve both coasteering and kayaking; there are a variety of jumps and climbs that we can use, and the calm water of the lake is perfect for paddling.

How does it work

Session duration is approximately 2 hours on the water, but we recommend allocating 3 hours out of your day. Quarry sessions are £40 per person with all equipment included.  Our sturdy double sit-on-top kayaks are stable and easy to use, and absolutely no previous kayaking experience is required as your instructor will introduce you to the boat and all of the basic strokes that you will need to get you on your way.  Participants must be eight years old or over and competent swimmers (i.e. be able to swim 25M in a pool unaided). We ask that children under 14 years old are accompanied by an adult.

Cornish Rock Tors’ instructors are all qualified UKCC instructors with a great deal of kayaking experience.  They have also undergone our in house training to ensure you are in the safest hands.

Cornish Rock Tors is licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Service and adhere to all of their safety guidelines.
